Duration:
1 Day
Waqrapukara is an archaeological site located in the Cusco region of Peru. It is an Inca ruin complex situated atop a mountain at an altitude of around 4,000 meters above sea level. The name “Waqrapukara” comes from the Quechua language and translates to “the fortress of the horns” due to the rock formations on the mountain resembling bull horns.
Waqrapukara is known for its Inca constructions, including stone walls, agricultural terraces, plazas, and ceremonial buildings. There are also a series of water channels and aqueducts that showcase the Inca’s skill and knowledge in hydraulic engineering. Due to its remote and secluded location, Waqrapukara has remained relatively untouched and has preserved its charm and mystery throughout the centuries.
Early in the morning, around 3:30 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and head to the starting point of our hike to Waqrapukara. After a stop at the Four Lakes of Acomayo and a delicious breakfast at Qenterococha Lake, we will begin our hike towards the Waqrapukara archaeological complex. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the flora and fauna of the area. Once we reach the archaeological complex, we will explore this incredible place with the detailed guidance of our guide, and you will have free time to explore and take photos. Afterwards, we will start hiking back on a different trail with different viewpoints of the Apurimac Canyon. At the end of the trail, our private transportation will be waiting for us, and we will enjoy lunch before returning to Cusco around 7:00 pm. It is important that travelers undertaking the Waqrapukara tour are in good physical condition and have acclimatized to the altitude due to the high elevation of the site.
