The Colca Canyon is an impressive gorge located in the Arequipa region, in southern Peru. It is one of the deepest canyons in the world, with a depth of approximately 3,270 meters, and it is home to many traditional Andean communities that have inhabited the area for centuries.
The canyon is renowned for its breathtaking natural landscape, which includes panoramic views of mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and valleys, as well as its abundant flora and fauna. Visitors can spot Andean condors, one of the largest birds in the world, as well as other species such as vicuñas, alpacas, and llamas.
The traditional villages along the canyon offer insight into Andean culture and the way of life of its inhabitants, who are primarily engaged in agriculture and handicrafts. Some notable attractions in the Colca Canyon include the terraces of Chivay and Yanque, the La Calera hot springs, and the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, a popular observation point to witness the majestic Andean condors in flight.
The Colca Canyon is a popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. It is one of Peru’s natural wonders that is worth exploring and appreciating its natural beauty.
We continue directly to the town of Chivay, arriving around 6:00 a.m. for breakfast. We then head to the Cruz del Cóndor to witness the spectacular flight of the condors and observe the depth of the Colca Canyon, spending approximately 1 hour 30 minutes at this location. Afterward, we visit the traditional villages of Pinchollo, Yanque, and Maca, where we’ll see miniature models, hanging tombs, amphitheaters, churches, and terraces. We arrive in Chivay and provide time for lunch before returning, making a stop at the Mirador de los Volcanes or Patapampa at an altitude of 4,850 meters, where you can appreciate the mountains, mountain ranges, and snow-capped peaks. In Pampa Cañahuas, we can observe the Vicuña National Reserve. We will arrive in Arequipa around 5:30 p.m. Arrival in Arequipa in the afternoon.
