Choquequirao Trek 4 Days

Duration:
4 Days

overview

Choquequirao, also known as the “Cradle of Gold,” is located on the Apurimac River, surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks and perched on a high ridge. It is a remote and rarely visited “Lost City of the Incas.” This Inca archaeological site is considered the sister site of Machu Picchu. While it is less known and less visited, Choquequirao is three times larger than Machu Picchu. It served as one of the last refuges for the Incas who resisted Spanish occupation after the conquest. Eventually, the site was abandoned and became covered by dense cloud forest vegetation. To this day, archaeologists continue to uncover new sections of the city.

ITINERARY

Cuzco – Cachora – Capuliyoc – Chiquisca.

We will pick you up from your hotel at 4:30 a.m. and travel in our tourist transportation for approximately 4 hours until we reach the town of Cachora (2800 m / 9,186 ft). Once there, you can enjoy a delicious Andean breakfast (not included) before heading towards Capuliyoc (2915 m / 9,563 ft). At this location, we will have lunch with a panoramic view of the Apurimac Valley and the snow-capped mountains of Vilcabamba. Our guide will also point out Choquequirao in the distance and the path we will take through the impressive Apurimac Canyon. We will then descend towards Chiquisca (1,900 m / 6,233 ft) for approximately 3 to 4 hours, where we will set up our first camp and conclude the day with dinner.

Chiquisca – Playa Rosalinas – Santa Rosa – Marampata.

On our second day, we will start with an early breakfast at the campsite and begin the hike as the sun rises to avoid the heat along the sunny trail in the Apurimac Valley. After 3 hours and crossing the Apurimac River, we will reach Santa Rosa, where you can take a refreshing short break. We will then continue uphill for 2 more hours until we reach Marampata (2,850 m / 9,350 ft), where a delicious lunch awaits us. In the afternoon, we will explore Marampata and learn about agriculture and the Andean way of life. We will spend the night at the second campsite and enjoy a satisfying dinner.

Marampata – Choquequirao – Marampata.

We will enjoy an early breakfast in the morning before hiking for 1.5 hours to the majestic Inca city of Choquequirao (3,035 m / 9,957 ft). We will spend the whole day exploring the archaeological site, including different buildings, the main square, agricultural terraces, and the famous terraces with llamas. In the afternoon, we will return to Marampata where a delicious dinner awaits us. We will have a good rest to prepare for the next day.

Marampata – Santa Rosa – Chiquisca – Capuliyoc.

After a good night’s rest and an early breakfast, we will pack our gear and begin our hike back to Capuliyoc. Following the same trail, this day will be the longest and most challenging of the trek. We will make a rest stop at Playa Rosalinas before starting the ascent from Playa Rosalinas to Chiquisca. Here, we will have our delicious lunch before continuing through the Apurimac Valley until we reach Capuliyoc. Our transportation will be waiting for us to take us back to Cusco.
