overview

Puerto Maldonado is a city in the Madre de Dios department, located in the southeastern region of Peru. It is known as the “capital of biodiversity” of the country due to its proximity to the Amazon rainforest and the abundant flora and fauna it hosts.

Tambopata, on the other hand, is a province in the Madre de Dios region of Peru. It is located approximately 45 km southeast of Puerto Maldonado and is one of the most important areas for biodiversity conservation in the country.

The Tambopata National Reserve is one of the main tourist attractions in the area, boasting a wide variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can also enjoy hiking, visit lakes and rivers, and get to know the local communities that inhabit the area.

ITINERARY

Pickup at the airport or bus terminal and transfer to the office for the necessary registrations. Transfer to the port captaincy where we will board a boat for approximately one hour to reach our lodge. Welcome meeting with a refreshing fruit juice made from local fruits. Check-in and settling into our respective rooms. After a restful break, you will have an introductory two-hour walk in the dense tropical forest, guided by a local expert guide. You will walk along our trails and have the opportunity to observe a variety of trees that can be over five hundred years old, as well as wildlife species such as toucans, oropendolas, macaws, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, and more. You will have the chance to experience the magic of our Amazon rainforest, which is part of the Tambopata National Reserve (278,000 hectares of protected land). In the evening, we will go in search of white caimans, which are usually found on sandbanks in the Madre de Dios River. You will need to bring a flashlight for this activity. We may also spot the capybara, the largest rodent in the world, which can weigh up to 60 kilograms. Return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

We wake up very early at 4:30 am to embark on an incredible boat journey to the largest macaw clay lick in the world, “EL CHUNCHO.” The boat ride will take approximately 1.5 hours, and along the way, we may have the opportunity to see species such as capybaras, which are the largest rodents, and tapirs. We might even spot the most beautiful feline of South America, the jaguar. Many of our clients have been witnesses, with photographic evidence, of encounters with these magnificent mammals. Upon reaching the macaw clay licks, you will see hundreds of parrots of different species gathering to eat the clay adjacent to the riverbank. We will settle in our chairs to witness one of the most stunning natural bird displays in the world. The parrots are followed by three species of the most colorful macaws in America, with red and green, blue and yellow plumage. They come together to consume the necessary clay in their daily diet and to eliminate toxins. On a good day of activity, you will see hundreds of these marvelous birds flying above you. It is an experience of a lifetime. We will then return to our lodge for breakfast and rest. Next, we will take a walk in the botanical garden where you can see various species of fruits, wood, and medicinal plants in our area, accompanied by our guide. Lunch will be served. In the afternoon, we will have the opportunity to go kayaking on the Tambopata River. We will silently navigate along the river, increasing our chances of observing the larger animals of the Tambopata Reserve. The evening is free for rest or the possibility of another night walk.

After breakfast, our boat will take us back to Puerto Maldonado following the same route. We will return to the city and arrive at Puerto Maldonado, where we will be transferred to the airport terminal.
